About Me

I am Kristie Short-Traxler, an accredited conservator - restorer and conservation scientist with over 25 years of experience in heritage preservation. I have been fortunate enough to work in the US, UK and NZ with a wide range of clients as both an employee and running my own consulting business. After spending a decade abroad in NZ, my family have returned to the UK and I am excited to relaunch my independent work with Traxler Conservation Services. I continue learning something new every single day and the length and breadth of my experience in establishing programs for the care of collections means that I can offer you a diverse service portfolio. My hope is that with this portfolio, I can share my passion for science, improving collection and display environments and creating conservation management frameworks.

In my professional roles, I have worked with some amazing collections and inspirational people including the British Museum, American Museum of Natural History, The Science Museum London, The Bodleian Libraries, Auckland Museum, Museum of Transport and Technology NZ, National Archives NZ and the National Trust.
Previous clients of my private practice include Auckland War Memorial Museum, Auckland Art Gallery, Auckland University, Museum of Transport and Technology, National Museum of New Zealand Te Papa + various private clients.

Throughout both paid roles and self employment, I have always believed in the power of volunteers and I practice what I preach. I continually give back to my profession in various guises by volunteering when I can and I encourage those I collaborate with to do the same.
I operate on a minimum per diem rate for various activities (analysis or training for example), rather than a fixed final price list, because no two objects, collections, or projects are the same. The support needed will depend on the materials, context, and the needs of your organisation or team. For that reason, I offer tailored quotations that reflect the specific requirements of each piece of work and take into account your own resources and goals. I carry full indemnity and liability as well as equipment insurance. If you would like to discuss a project or explore what support might be helpful, please get in touch — I would be delighted to have a conversation.
